"Her boy, her only boy"

History of the World
by Margaret Gannon

Her boy, her only boy.
She rocks him, enraptured,
fulfilled. Cocooning him
in her devotion.

She rocks him, enraptured.
Her girls playing nearby watch
her, sense their altered place
in affection’s hierarchy.

Her girls playing nearby watch
the history of the world repeated.
Sons, daughters, all loved,
but not the same.

The history of the world repeated
in a playroom, mother loving
them just a little less than
her boy, her only boy.

Margaret Gannon is a retired attorney. Admitted to practice in 1975, she was the first woman west of the Mississippi representing injured railroad workers. Her calling for 40 years was representing women in Family Court. After years of legal briefs, she is learning poetry as a new language. OLLI instructors and OLLI poetry friends are fostering a spring of creativity and just plain fun.

Editor's note: Margaret Gannon is a first-time contributor to Vistas & Byways
