The Visit

​Blue-green hummingbird with a ticka tak tak
enters the courtyard
and hovers near my face;
we stare at each other a moment
before it zigzags out
 
and circles amongst
the plants, sipping,
tasting the banquet that our courtyard
affords;
lemon blossoms, a tiny rosebud.
 
engorgement comes quick.
it bolts away over the gate.
 
but what about us
and our moment
 
face to face.

​Jane Barrier is currently a retired computer programmer who has been living with MS for
over 30 years. She enjoyed acting in local theaters until multiple sclerosis, diagnosed in 1990, curtailed her trodding the sidewalks, much less “the boards.” Thanks to OLLI instructors in poetry writing, and an offshoot group of students who formed to hear and comment on each others’ work, her feeling for poetry has been reinvigorated.
