Day Trippers, Napa, October 2020
by Kathryn Santana Goldman
They stood at the hotel entrance on First Street
planning their assault.
She in a burnt orange sundress,
he in Tommy Bahama and flip flops.
The upper valley conflagration confined,
the sky blue, no longer toxic.
The whispers of waning warmth
seduce fall Day Trippers.
They succumb easily.
Eager to escape the confines
of anywhere that’s too small
when you stay too long.
They saunter out of Starbucks,
sipping their double shot of something
over foaming something else.
Mouth and nose uncovered.
Holding out until the last minute,
as I approach,
then briefly obscure their sipping lips,
without breaking stride.
With fashionable face shields,
worn like Tiffany bracelets,
they lounge at sidewalk cafes sipping wine
and savoring their mask-less-ness.
1 glass becomes 3,
6 feet becomes 2,
7 months of denial
crushes the pretense of caring.
They head home sated,
refreshed by the illusion of freedom--
leaving what behind?
