Tow Truck Blues at 4 A.M.
by Angie Minkin

I don’t sleep at 4 a.m. It’s just a given.
I’m awake at 4 a.m. You, too?

Let’s talk, then, about steamy sheets,
let’s talk love at 4 a.m. Let’s talk

breath and lasting and holding strong
at 4 a.m. Let’s talk kids and worries and hope.

Wait. I can’t hear you. Wait. Don’t
sleep. Don’t leave me alone at 4 a.m.

Let’s talk about how the morning will be-
come a new day, maybe a day without fear,

maybe a day with sun. Well, what if the Prius
won’t start? Well, maybe the tow truck driver

will arrive like a knight. Maybe he too is up
at 4 a.m., smiling because he saves people

from terrible days and lost causes.
Maybe he’ll rev our stalled engines.
