Fallow Season

​​After this season of burdens,
I long to lie fallow,
allow nature its wise course.
Let leaves and dreams,
buried nuts and rotted plums
sidle into death, break down,
merge with water and earth.
 
I sit on the porch as day fades,
grateful for pine cones
spilling from the Monterey’s arms,
the willow leaves thinning
like an old woman’s hair,
neighbors laughing under fairy lights
around a small fire.
 
Tonight, as comets streak the dark void,
I will wander the stars,
a pilgrim paying homage
to the dying year.

​​MJ Moore lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her various incarnations have included technical writer and editor, grassroots environmental activist, first grade teacher, poet and flash fiction writer, wife, and mother. Strongly bicoastal, she thrives on salt air, wind and waves, but also loves mountains, deserts, forests and streams. Writing, for her, is a source of vision and joy.
