Ingenuity hovers in Martian air,
its shadow sliding over red sand.
From millions of miles away,
hands glide across keyboards,
urging it into the unknown.

How do we trace back through time
the dawn of this desire?

Before astronauts somersaulted
through space stations.
Before Armstrong’s boot stirred moon dust,
or that first breath-taking orbit revealed
Earth’s blue-green curve.

Before Lindbergh’s plane rumbled across the Atlantic,
the brief airborne moments at Kitty Hawk,
the colored balloons lifting over Paris.

Before a Dutchman raised the first telescope.
Before Arab astronomers plotted the heavens,
Greeks named the constellations,
or human fingers pointed to stars
in dark velvet sky.

When did imagination first loosen
the bonds of clay
and rise, lighter than air,
carrying the desire to know--
     there--
               there--
                         there--
