          With a Theme of Work

2 Poems:
Tapping on the Glass - 1978
and
Cleaning House

by Carla Pasion

Tapping on the Glass
(1978)

She brought up what she thought was a good
question raised in the concurring opinion.
No one responded.
Three and a half minutes later,
the guy on her right made the exact same point
and was praised for the quality of his comment.
Trying to hide her emotions
lest she be accused of hysteria
she pointed out the discrepancy,
the disrespect, the outright theft!
They were baffled.
Not a man among them could recall
that she had spoken earlier at all.
They moved on to the next case.

Cleaning House

You open a door to a room so full
of shoes and perfectly hung clothing
that you think for a second
these people must be running
a business out of their home
like your cousin in Modesto
with all the beautiful wedding dresses
the young brides rent,
but then you realize it’s a closet
and all of these things
are theirs to wear or not.
You resume vacuuming.
Later, you spy a cat turd
peeking out from behind a laundry basket
and nudge it a little further behind.
