Garbage Day
by Carla Pasion

The recycling bin is always full.
We drink a lot of wine and still
get a newspaper. But it’s that
land-fill bin that pulls
on the heartstrings: that which lands
here is doomed to eternal existence.
Plastic and more plastic, enclosed
in bubble wrap. Forever.
I might have hoped that
what lived beyond my time on planet
would be a life’s work, or children,
or even a poem or two,
but really the lasting legacy goes out
weekly in the grey landfill can.
