Holy Encounter

​Sister Mercedes blessed my wife and me
while we were eating fish tacos
at Rubio’s Coastal Grill.
Then she spoke to us anxiously
about being an apostle, like Paul,
for Jesus, and her mistreatment
by some local churches.
“They will not take me in,” she said
“and offer me shelter
from the blazing sun and heat.”
 
When I suggested the Poverello House,
she proclaimed indignantly
that their ministry
disagreed with hers.
 
A disgruntled customer
urged us to ignore her,
but I saw God’s Light and Love
flowing through her
as a gift to everyone
and wondered
if she might be an angel.
 
So I bought her lunch
and blessed her as well.
It was a holy encounter
between children of God.
