Moonlight Sonata
by David A. Scott

Reminds me of my mother,
a young pianist in her early 20’s,
recently married to my father,
older, brilliant, and accomplished,
a man without gentleness,
closed off in his heart
because of his own harsh mother.

Playing the piano was a refuge,
a secret garden
filled with angelic music,
her fingers dancing across the ivory,
a place to hide
from his insults
and attempt to heal.
