​                 of Time 

" 'cause when it’s right its magic only we can make"

Chamber Music

we laughed over a 16th note delay,
giggly glee of tripping on a millisecond,
joy of music well tried if not well played,
new friends only met through music’s appeal
 
‘cause when it’s right it's magic only
we can make, I not I, we not they,
to know enough of oneself to listen,
be in time when bumpy time intended
 
‘cause when it’s right, bumps spring forward,
propel to heights, back flip into meditation,
astonishing speed with rhythm and grace,
blare and crunch of motif piles wispy swirls
 
‘cause when it’s right we merge apart dancing,
grave and forlorn sway through somber depths
or four-step swing and salsa hip-toss joyous play,
breadth and depth not at hand with other music
 
‘cause when it’s right we find music inside music,
harmonies that weave our heartstrings in sympathy,
counterpoint complexities pulse us forward sideways,
life histories dissolve into our symphonic now

​A retired physician, Corey Weinstein is a musician, poet, songwriter and clarinet player. He has published two CDs of original music inspired by the Klezmer and Yiddish stage musical traditions and led Umzist, a Klezmer band playing benefits for Jewish elders for more than a decade. He wrote and performed at various venues a singspiel, Erased: Babi Yar, the SS and Me to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the massacre at Babi Yar. He plays clarinet in the Or Shalom Jewish Community choir, with The Jamberries Jazz Band at Shabbat services at Rhoda Goldman Plaza, and with any chamber music group he can find. He lives in the Ingleside of San Francisco with his wife of 37 years, Pat Skala.
