   With the Theme of Making or Breaking Bread

What If  .   .   .

​What if this is the day? What if you are it and . . . nobody told you? What if you were gathering your courage? What if someone asked you, “Have you looked into the freezer lately, the one at TJ’s?” Have you seen how Cauliflower embodied both pasta and pizza and that doesn’t even count how you can grill it like a marinated steak or in the wonder of an air fryer. If that’s possible for cauliflower, well what else is on your menu for change? Cauliflower’s creativity should not be missed. I gotta tell you, I don’t even like to cook. However, with the transformation of cauliflower it’s given me . . . pause. Cauliflower, well who would have thought that frothy whiteness could reform, not conform but transform? Give yourself permission too, to stop, to start, to be satisfied with the miraculous meandering of salads with pears, oranges, and peppers with rocket to boot. What if the kitchen is yet one more spiritual exercise and what if you don’t need an A+—or to impress ANYONE, seriously not a soul. Yes, what if when cooking ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE and who cares what drops on the floor? (You may have a dog who loves to HOOVER and that requires no electricity—that gives new meaning to alternative energy.) What if the kitchen could be full of moonlight and magic? Perhaps you too were born into a family of MAKERS not BAKERS living this life in the spirit of DON’T FENCE ME IN or living like SOMEONE WHO LEFT THE GATE OPEN. Can you in the spirit of chemical reactions and wonder open your doors as well as your mind? Can you cast a spell and be the maker, the baker, the inviter, the convener of whatever you want? Wave your wand and do your abracadabras and see, just see, if cauliflower can be its own thing. What about you? Perhaps you too can be something reborn even transformed.

​​Kathryn Miller works in poetry and visual arts. She was trained as a tapestry weaver and has been engaged in collage, iPad painting, along with the woven world. She often returns to her love of poetry. Kathryn is an avid explorer of words and images. Her home is New Mexico and has worked in the Bay Area for the past 18 years. Her PhD explored women’s narrative and what women do with their stories from their lives. Her poetry books include Tango Dancer and Triologue, which was written with two friends through email. Both were self-published. Her professional work has been as an executive coach with private and public organizations.
