After Party

​The bubbly polyphonic symphony of
​dinner table chatter has a final gasp
here in the squeaky squiggle of wash up,
Champagne flutes sing their crystal tinkle ding,
water splashes sharply bouncing tiny plinks of delight.
 
Let me advise: always hand wash the glassware,
allow my reprise: never miss this mundane miracle.
 
Tactile pleasure, fingers knowing the mystery,
glass the magic of sound and light.
Neither solid nor liquid, it can
ting like a bell, ping like a chime,
splash shimmer ring of glitter glare.
 
Not quite liquid.               Not quite solid.
 
Cooled to hold the wine,  
metal-infused super-heated sand
reverberates from any glancing graze.
Soapy bubbles reflect, transfuse and
confuse with sparkles of light and sound.
Just the odd glancing blow turns bright
clink to clunk, the crack with no repair.
 
Inevitable incidental woe and surprise,
how and what to treasure and where.
 
Kitchen music of wash and dry,
followed by a put-away knocking 
into shelf place chaotic carillon coda.
Quiet solid awaiting the next chance
to sparkle and plink at table or sink.

​​A retired physician, Corey Weinstein is a musician, poet, songwriter and clarinet player. He has published two CDs of original music inspired by the Klezmer and Yiddish stage musical traditions and led Umzist, a Klezmer band playing benefits for Jewish elders for more than a decade. He wrote and performed at various venues a singspiel, Erased: Babi Yar, the SS and Me to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the massacre at Babi Yar. He plays clarinet in the Or Shalom Jewish Community choir, with The Jamberries Jazz Band at Shabbat services at Rhoda Goldman Plaza, and with any chamber music group he can find. He lives in the Ingleside District of San Francisco with his wife of 37 years, Pat Skala.
